You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.
Desmond Tutu

There are a lot of quotes to be had that inform us of the undesirability of family. These quotes all seem to indicate that family members are people to be endured but rarely enjoyed. There are times when every one of us can sympathize with that sentiment.

That being said, I think it might be time to take a moment to stop and look at your family member as a gift from God.  No fair thinking thoughts like, ‘God has a terrible sense of humor’; or ‘I guess it’s the thought that counts’. Take the time to remember the fun you had with that person when you were children.

Remember a few times when you expressed love for one another. Remember when that person helped you or affirmed you in some way.  That person was a gift to you as you are to them. Do the best you can to make sure you’re the gift God intended.  When sometimes the hurt they cause doesn’t look like a gift, take a little time to think of the times they were the perfect gift.

Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.
Brian Tracy

Just a little thought to remind you to take some time each day to relax and rejuvenate. For some a nice warm,  bubble bath.  For some a few minutes reading the paper. For others,  just some alone time in their favorite thinking spot. Whatever does it for you, make it a ritual each day. Calm your mind.  Get everything placed neatly on the balance beam of your life.  It is only then that you can face each part of your life with the quality of care you most want to show.

The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people.
– Gilbert Chesterton

If the neighbors are driving you crazy,  remember that you aren’t alone. You’re probably driving them crazy, too. Try to allow those you must live near the right to their faults. After all, you have yours. I’m not saying to overlook illegal or dangerous behavior but cars parked in front of your house and children playing too loudly outdoors are minor inconveniences.  The paper plates blowing into your yard from the birthday party yesterday don’t take that much effort to pick up.  Hopefully, they’ll feel the same way about the garbage can your dog knocked over.

Love your neighbors.

Instead of worrying about what people say of you, why not spend time trying to accomplish something they will admire.
Dale Carnegie

Good advice. Better advice would be to stop worrying about what others think altogether.  Start looking at your dreams and working toward them. If you will admire what you have done, it doesn’t matter what others think. Those who love you will be happy to see you satisfied.

Those who don’t love you, don’t count.

If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.

Peace Pilgrim

Never let your thoughts bring you down! There may be things going wrong in your life but there is much to be thankful for. Be sure the negative things don’t take precedence in your thoughts. It’s important to fix those things that are not what they should be but it is equally important not to let those things become our whole focus. The smudge of dirt on the face doesn’t remove the beauty of the face. It’s just a little flaw that can be washed away.

The nearer the dawn the darker the night.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

When we are at are very lowest point, when everything around us seems as if there will never be a moment of brightness again, remember this. If it can’t get any darker,  dawn is just around the corner. Light will be there.

Just hold on for just a little bit longer. Don’t quit.  Don’t give up.

Character isn’t something you were born with and can’t change, like your fingerprints.  It’s something you weren’t born with and must take responsibility for forming.
Jim Rohn

Who would you like to be? Discounting finances and popularity, what type of person you would like to become?   Take a look at the people in your life that you really admire.  Pick a character trait they have that you would like to have.

Spend each day this month concentrating on building that trait into your character.

It only takes 30 days to build a habit. Wouldn’t it be great if you could build a character that others could admire just by taking the time each day for 30 days to work on becoming the man or woman you would like to be? Give it a try.

All parents believe their children can do the impossible. They thought it the minute we were born, and no matter how hard we’ve tried to prove them wrong, they all think it about us now.  And the really annoying thing is, they’re probably right.
Cathy Guisewite

Trust your parents opinion of you. You can do the impossible. All you have to do is try. Reach out for what you want in life. Find ways to accomplish those things people say can’t be done. The faith your parents have in you is justified.  So long as you trust in their belief in you, you will soar.  You may never reach the top of the mountain they thought you could conquer but you will, most certainly, get farther than you would have otherwise.

Don’t find fault, find a remedy.
Henry Ford

There are very few reasons why it is necessary to find out who is at fault when something goes wrong.  However, when something does go wrong,  there is always a reason to fix it. Use your time wisely. Use it to find ways to fix what is wrong instead of wasting time trying to find somone to blame.

To reach a port, we must sail – sail, not tie at anchor – sail, not drift.
Franklin D.  Roosevelt

No matter what you hope to achieve in life, you must sail towards that goal. You can’t just sit there and you can’t just drift along hoping that eventually you’ll end up somewhere close to your destination.  You must have charted a direction. Once you’ve done that, you must start moving.

A painter doesn’t become a master artist by looking at all the paintings on the wall. He must actually paint.  Not only that, but he must work regularly to achieve his goals. A gymnast can’t become a gold medal winner by watching gymnastic on television.  They must practice and work and adjust their lifestyle to become a winner.

You want to achieve your goals?  Well, then, start sailing, start painting, start practicing.  Get started but be sure you have directions to where you’re going.
