November 11 Verse of the Day

Sunday, September 11th, 2016

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14

Our country has just elected a very controversial president.  Many are angry.

Many, including a former President, had refused to vote for either candidate.  Those who did felt strongly about their choice.  Now there are protests and destruction in many cities.

You have promised to heal our land if Your people, called by Your Name would humble themselves and pray.

Father, I am one of Your people.

I am called by Your Name.

I am joining now with so many across our country to ask You to heal the divisions. Speak peace to those who fear for our country now.

Give our leaders, especially our newly elected President, wisdom to guide our country.  Silence those who would cause dissent.  Above all, Lord, may Your will be done in this country.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins,  He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We want to thank you, Father, for Your forgiveness.  We have so often broken Your commandments. We haven’t walked as You wanted us to. Sometimes we have completely walked away from You but always You welcome us back. Forgive us our sins. Guide us from this day forward in the path You would have us take. Never lose sight of us, Lord.

If you are carrying strong feelings about something that happened in your past, they may hinder your ability to live in the present.
Les Brown

Things that have happened in our past often haunt us. We think the hurt is just about healed and then something comes up that pushes it to the front of our minds and lives. Next time that happens to you – stop the cycle.  Take a cold, hard look at the event that persists in resurfacing.

Ask yourself if you can change anything about that event now. Ask yourself if you can heal any hurts that others have been feeling as a result of that event. Ask yourself if you need to forgive someone for what has happened. Think carefully about your answers. If there is nothing that can be done to change that event, accept that it happened. If there is nothing that you can do to help others heal from this event, forgive yourself for any part you played in it.

If you still hold a grudge, forgive the person involved. Once you’ve done all these things, allow yourself to put that book on the shelf as being finished. You may have to do this many times before you are completely healed but it is worth the effort. Don’t let that event dictate who you are now. Accept your feelings as justified.  Accept that the past cannot be changed.

Colossians 3:12-13

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another.

We are Your elect, Lord.  The fact that You would call us that is overwhelming. We have done so little to deserve this honor.  We are so humbled that you can see beyond our faults and call us holy. You love us and have given us the task of representing You to a world that so needs to be loved. You have called us Your elect.

Help us to be worthy to be called Your elect.  Let us show the world Your mercy, kindness, and longsuffering. Let us be forgiving so that they can see in a small way Your forgiveness.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land

There is much about our land that is in need of healing today, Father. We come as Your people to seek You. Forgive us our sins, Father. We turn to you, now, and ask that you heal our land.

If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa,  there are also roads that lead to their goal. Two of these roads could be named Goodness and Forgiveness.
Nelson Mandela

It’s a wise man who realizes that goodness and forgiveness are essential for true success.

Particularly if one of your goals is to find happiness in life. Look around you today. Look for the good.  Look inside yourself today.  Find forgiveness.

June 10 Quote of the Day

If we could read the secret history of our enemies we should find in each man’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

All of us have someone in our lives or backgrounds that we call an enemy – or at least we avoid them with everything we have. We dislike these people and want nothing to do with them. Holding grudges only hurts the grudge holder. Anger only hurts the angry.

So take some time to look at the person you find so repugnant. Try to see how life has shaped them.  Try to see why they have become the person they are and why they have done the things they have. When you really look into the life of another, enough to see their suffering and pain, you see a human just like yourself.  Chances are you won’t feel the same again.

1 John 2:11

But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Father, teach us how to forgive. Those we love have the power to hurt us more than those we have no relationship with. Father, the hurt can go deep some times. We are Your children and we want to forgive as You have done but we’re not very good at it. When we are unable to forgive on our own, lift the anger and bitterness from us. Flood us with Your love so the hatred can’t live in us. And, Lord, help us speak forgiveness even when we don’t feel it.

Ephesians 4:31-32

Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Lord, this is a hard thing You ask of us. We are not able in ourselves to conquer the bitterness and anger that comes at times. The hurt that we feel sometimes goes so deeply that only the strength of Your love can bring forgiveness. We want to do as You ask, Lord, we just aren’t always able. Help us to reach upward to You that we may walk in Your footsteps.

Romans 12:20

If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;

Father, it isn’t an easy task to take the higher road. Your Son showed us the way when, on the cross, He asked for forgiveness for those who crucified Him. We receive far less from our enemies but have a greater time forgiving them. Give us the strength to take that step of forgiveness by helping our enemies when we know they are in need.
