Removing Pet Urine Stains

Q:  Do you know how to remove pet urine stains from carpets?

A:   It’s good to know that I am not the only one with this problem.  I have tried numerous things myself without too much success so I decided it was time for a Google search to see if others had the answer.   I found several websites that have excellent information about why stain removal and odor removal from pets is so difficult.  Probably that information doesn’t interest you right now.  If  it does, simply google ‘pet stain removal’.  What probably does interest you is the solution to your problem.  The most popular answer that I found on several sites is to take a 50-50 mixture of white vinegar and water and douse the area.  Let it sit for about 1/2 hour and then blot up the excess water.  If the stain has been there for a while, you will need to do this more than once.  The idea is to soak the carpet through to the carpet lining which has also been affected.  This supposedly removes both the odor and the stain.

Other suggestions are:

a:  Purchase an ORGANIC stain removal product from a pet store or some place like Home Depot or Lowes.  Organic is necessary since ‘like dissolves like.’

b:  Peroxide and water on a sponge

c:  Soak the area with Windex and then blot it up.  Test the area first to be sure it doesn’t spot your carpet.

d:  Put a tablespoon of Tide Laundry detergent in very hot water and pour it over the spot.  (Cheaper laundry detergents apparently don’t work as well.)  Use a shop vacuum to remove excess liquid on the carpet.

e:  One woman who  ‘fosters’ dogs for a rescue organization recommends Simple Solution Carpet Shampoo (NOT liquid or concentrate Simple Solution)

I plan to start at the top and work my way down with these suggestions myself.  Hopefully, the first one – which seems to be the most popular – will work.  I understand that it can take a couple of days for the odor of vinegar to leave the house but once it does the stain and the odor of pet urine will be gone.  I have to thank you for asking since I should have looked this one up for myself long ago.  Let me know if any of these ideas work for you.
