I Hate My Name!

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Q: I hate my name! I’ve always hated it. I want to change it but my dad says shut up and deal. My mom and step dad just ignore me when I say I want to change it. How old do I have to be before I can get it changed?

A: You have to wait until you are legally an adult to change your name. And then it’s kind of expensive. Can I suggest some alternatives? Almost all teenagers I know, don’t like their names. If you happen to be one of those unfortunate kids whose parents decided to name you something cutesy like Studly Mann (if you’re a boy) or Rose Bush (if you’re a girl), I can see your point. What about using your middle name? Suppose Studly’s middle name was Aaron. He could say he was S. Aaron Mann. Everyone could call him Aaron and this could continue into adulthood at no expense. Rose could do the same. If her middle name was Kelly she could be R. Kelly. Or maybe she could just use her initials and become RK. When you say it, it has a science fiction sound – Arekay. Okay. Maybe you would consider that cutesy too.
I would also like to ask you why you want to change your name. Usually people hate their names because they get teased because of them like the examples above. Or they don’t think their names reflect who they want to be. Changing your name will not change what you look like. Only lifestyle changes can do that. I think the most important thing you need to focus on is who you are. Accept who you are and like who you are. Do you want to be that dainty ballerina but you’re really almost 6 feet tall and big boned? Love yourself like you are. Dainty short people are almost never models. Models are the long legged girls who walk with confidence and self-assurance. Enhance what you have! Work at becoming all the things you want to be. When you do that, you’ll become someone the rest of the world admires. Once that happens, other people will be naming their children after you!

Neat Fact

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

I learned an interesting fact the other night.  Did you know that in the year 2011, every single adult on the planet can take the last two digits of their birth year and add it to the age they will be this year and come up with the number 111.  I had no idea why this worked so I emailed my son.  His answer was a little above me but may be something you would understand.  Here it is:  What’s essentially going on there is almost everyone alive today were born after 1900.  So: Year Born (YB) = 1952.  Age (A) = 2011-YB.  Last Two Digits of Year Born (LT) = 1952-1900.  So: A+LT = (2011-1952)+(1952-1900) = 2011-1900 = 111 🙂

RSS Feed

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

One of the joys of having adult sons who are smarter than you is that you can ask them questions and get really good answers.  If I ever make it on the  ”Who Wants to be a Millionaire” show, they will definitely be on my ”phone a friend” list.  Several people have asked me for my RSS feed. I really wasn’t sure what it was so I asked my son. He informs me that I do have one. For the reader who had asked me for my RSS feed, I now have it.  It is http://advicefrommom.net/?feed=rss2.  I hope this is helpful to you.

Hair Flowers

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Q: What kind of glue can I use on the fabric of hair flowers to decorate them?

A:  I am not that ”crafty” so I had to look up the answer to this on the internet.  I am quoting a site from Amazon and I have placed 2 links on the end of the quote for you to look up yourself.  Hopefully, this will be helpful. Hot glue is a great product, but only for certain uses. Anything with a slick surface, like glass and metal and plastic, won’t really hold hot glue for very long. There is nothing for the glue to bind to, no “tooth”. Hot glue is better suited to paper and fabric. So what you need is a glue that will stick to the flower, which is fabric and so has lots of “tooth”, the slick metal barrette or clip. Not too many products will do this. A product I can recommend for this is called E-6000. It can be found in most craft stores and here on Amazon. It’s more of a “cement” type glue, and will bond slick surfaces together, no problem. But a better suggestion might be to get a fine wire or sturdy thread and attach the flowers to the clip this way, if you can do it so that it doesn’t show. This would hold the flowers better than any glue.

Job Loss

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Q: I lost my job last week. I wonder if I can make money online. I am really very upset.

A:  I am sorry to hear about your job loss.  It seems to be a recurring theme today.  To answer your question, making money online appears to be a nice part time income but I don’t know of many people who have made a livable wage from it.  I know of a couple who together, were able to make enough money selling items on Ebay to allow them to stay home during their child’s preschool years. Most people selling items on craigslist and ebay seem to do so for a little extra income.  They are purchasing these items inexpensively through garage sales and auctions.  Many people use sites such as Amazon and Half.com to sell books online.  They purchase books from library sales, thrift stores and garage sales to be resold at a profit through Amazon and Half.com.  My personal experience doesn’t indicate that blogging will make you money online but I understand that many people have websites that get enough traffic to justify advertisements that make them money as well.  To my knowledge, except in rare cases, none of these outlets will make a fulltime income but they may help you through the tough times.  Good luck to you!

Music Scene in Detroit

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Q: What exactly type of a music arena really does Downtown Detroit have at night time? The subsequent time I visit The downtown area Detroit, I would like to check out the music landscape. What precisely kind of a music landscape may Downtown Detroit have and exactly where are the very best locations to see good music. I’m interested in seeing contemporary new age music, traditional music, and jazz music. Also, are the places to see great music safe to travel to at night time?

A:  There are several places on the internet which give you information about Detroit and the entertainment that can be had there.  guide2detroit is probably the most extensive that I can find.  It will not only give you the music information you are looking for but several other types of entertainment as well.  Safety at night is always a question no matter where you go.  Just be sure to use common sense.  Stay in well lighted areas.  Keep with a group whenever possible.  If you aren’t with members of your own group, be sure to stay in well populated areas.  Have your car keys handy so that you can enter your vehicle quickly.  If you stick with the normal safety measures, chances are you can have an enjoyable experience.
